William Sandy is associated with the Papunya Tula artists from the mid-1970s and 1980s. His subjects and themes included emu, dingo, women, green bean, Tingari ancestoral stories and water Dreaming.
In 1985 Sandy won the Northern Territory Art Award, and a few years later was included in Dreamings, a touring exhibition through the United States (1988) and Papunya Tula, at John Weber Gallery, New York (1989).
In Australia his paintings are included in the collections of Broken Hill City Art Gallery; Flinders University Art Museum, Adelaide; Museum and Art Galleries of the Northern Territory, Darwin; the Holmes à Court Collection, Perth; and the Wollongong City Art Gallery.
